Pharmaceutical name: Finasteride

Proscar is a category of steroid reductase inhibitor. It functions by diminishing the levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. This reduction leads to a smaller prostate gland, which aids in alleviating urinary issues.
Proscar inhibits an enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase, crucial for converting testosterone into another hormone that stimulates prostate growth. Consequently, the prostate's size is reduced. The effects of Finasteride on the prostate persist only while the medication is being used. Once it is discontinued, the prostate begins to enlarge again.
It is utilized to address urinary complications resulting from an enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) and to lower the likelihood of requiring surgery for BPH treatment.
Proscar is not recommended for individuals who are known to be hypersensitive to Finasteride. The use of Finasteride is also not advised for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
